Who’s Behind This: Why He / Him Is Tracking the Rise of India's GCCs

Hello! I’m Vinay Rao — chronicler, researcher, and the voice behind Second HQ

Over the last few years, I’ve watched India’s role in the global enterprise shift from the margins to the middle. What once began as support is now strategy. What was called offshore is now on the frontlines of value creation. More importantly, the vocabulary we use to describe this shift has moved just as fast, pushed along by the swell of conversations about GCCs.

This project, therefore, began out of equal parts curiosity and urgency. I wanted to understand the shift taking place and put a schema to it across org charts, cities, tech stacks, job postings, and even the new metaphors we lean on.

I started profiling every kind of modern GCC, spoke with operating leaders, and spent time with tech, product, and design teams to understand how HQ vision turns into local execution. Through it all, one pattern stood out: the modern GCC is no longer an extension of the enterprise, it is becoming the de facto engine that powers the proverbial Rolls Royce.

This editorial exercise is my attempt to trace that shift. To spotlight the architecture, talent, context, and capability that make India the second HQ of the global enterprise.

So if you’re building something here — or with teams — I hope you find this work useful.

A Narrative Ledger for India's GCCs

There are 2,117 Global Capability Centers operating in India today. They generate nearly $100 bn in revenue, employ 2.36 mn professionals, and house the most consequential tech work most people haven't heard of. This essay is about why a sustained editorial ledger is the right response to it.

The Path to 2100: The Logic of the Ledger

A list is a record of things that exist. A ledger is a record of things that accumulate meaning over time. Second HQ is being built as the latter. This essay explains why I've set out to document GCCs in deliberate batches, what each cohort is designed to reveal, and how it is shaping the future.

The City as the Definitive Operating System

When Goldman Sachs chose Bengaluru in 2004, it was (with a lot of intentionality) choosing a city that had spent forty years building the conditions for consequential work. This essay argues why cities are active variables in every GCC story, and why they deserve their own record.
